Berthe Morisot's (French, 1841-1895) painting "La Lecture" has been a part of the MFA Collection for close to 40 years. Berthe Morisot, as a female artist, was restricted to primarily depicting domestic settings, yet rose to become a leading Impressionist, exhibiting in all but one Impressionist show, due to the birth of her daughter Julie. Her body of work, more than 850 paintings, pastels and watercolors created during her short life, has in recent years been reconsidered as radical and innovative depictions of the inner lives of her subjects.
