Élisabeth Louise Vigée, born in 1755 in Paris, received her first painting instruction from her father, a pastelist of some renown, and came to be known as one of the greatest portrait painters of the 18th century. At the time, painting instruction was heavily restricted through the academie system, which often rejected female artist applicants, denying them the opportunity to further their craft. However, Vigee Le Brun was able to draw upon the vast number of works in the collections of her husband and his family, honing her skills through self-instruction and copying masterworks.  Throughout much of her career, Vigee Le Brun painted her daughter, Julie (whom she nicknamed Brunette).
